What would be a good deer hunting rifle?

Like previously stated check your local laws. We can use hand guns over .38 cal shotguns and black powder in the lower portion of MI. You have to go upnorth for hunting w a rifle.
I have shot alot of deer w my old pump 12ga. But love to use the 30-06. Optics are huge. I have Leupold and Nikon on all my guns now , thats my price range and still great quality. Lessoned learned on the cheap scopes.

I agree that selection has to depend on what you can shoot well and what distance you'll be hunting. And shot placement can not be overstated. It's crucial.

The common deer calibers around here are .270, 30-06, .30-30, and 7mm

Depending on the terrain a good choice for deer hunting is a 30-30 Winchester to start. Has been the chice for first time hunters for over a hundred years. Hard to beat for reliability.
