Unconcealed Carry

In Utah, with a Concealed Firearm Permit, you can carry Loaded Concealed, AND Loaded OC, there may be some fuss from the Regular Joe who doesn't like to see guns in Public. The Utah Law concerning Open Carry is a Little Vague, we do not have a law that says you CAN, but we also do not have a law that says you CAN'T, but there is a law that says without a Concealed Firearm Permit your firearm MUST be in the Open and Statutorily Unloaded (Semi Auto;full mag, nothing in Battery. Revolver, the chamber under the hammer and the next one in rotation must be empty). But Utah also has a new law that says 76-10-506. Threatening with or using dangerous weapon in fight or quarrel. (1) As used in this section, "threatening manner" does not include: (a) the possession of a dangerous weapon, whether visible or concealed, without additional behavior which is threatening; so now a person cannot be harrassed for just having a firearm on their hip walking down the sidewalk

That's cool. I know you guys have done a lot of work for the 2nd amendment in Utah, so if you keep at it, I expect that it will get sorted out in pretty short order.

Guns should be carried for personal defense, not Activism.

I will start by saying, I fully believe in and support the 2nd Amendment. I believe we all have a God Given Individual Right to keep and bear arms that the Government Shall Not Infringe. I also believe that Open Carry is covered under the 2nd Amendment. I also believe, and teach, that with that right, comes Responsibility. Responsible gun ownership, and Responsible Carry, enhances the relationship between Law Enforcement and the Gun Owners, but Irresponsible Owners, and Irresponsible Carriers, are detrimental to that relationship. So with that in mind, I bring you the following.

Irresponsible Open Carry Activism Jeopardizes The RKBA

The best way to do that 99% of the time is Concealed Carry. Even if people do choose to Open Carry, they shouldn’t do it to provoke confrontation nor be uncooperative with the police while doing it. It makes gun owners look bad, turns cops against us, wastes their valuable time and certainly isn’t going to make it more likely that people will think “oh, gun owners are normal people, not trouble makers.

Spread the Word. Most people have realized that the time for “solidarity” through tolerance of the guys carrying guns with video cameras has come and gone. Their bravado is jeopardizing our RKBA and should be seen as an embarrassment to responsible gun owners. When the OC Movement started, people carrying while going about their daily business to show responsibly armed people are part of everyday life, it made some sense… but, the extremists have spun out of control. Let’s make sure that the firearms community is condemning this behavior.

I am not calling for a change in laws or for us to ostracize people who carry openly in a responsible, civil manner. Perhaps responsible OCers should be most concerned and the most openly critical of those who are using their guns to get (inevitably negative) attention?
Obviously, I am a proponent of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and do not want to to see OC made illegal, but I fear that will happen more and more often, in more and more places (as it already has it one state), if the confrontational actions of a very few reckless people continue.

I hate the media. For the past few days they have been making a big deal about OC becoming legal 11/1 and predicting all the problems it would cause. They even had roving reporters out looking for people OCing. They didn't find any. Then one radio station this morning was AMAZED that there hadn't been any gunfights yet. Did I mention I hate the media.

Only problem is gangs oc ing. Although im sure the police will find a way around it, at this point you can't make a stop basedvon weapon alone, that is unless it's suspect of being class 3. The laws are really iffy for this kind of stuff, and the best way to protect yourself should you oc is to record any encounter with police

OK, I have a question that bares on the open carry topic.. When exactly did we as CITIZENS of USA. Loose the right to open carry?!? I mean 120 yrs ago, EVERYONE was open carry. So what changed? Why was/is open carry suddenly so taboo?? When did the states get together and pass all the these laws against it.? Was there a vote? How did this happen w/o a vote?

Open Carry allowed in Georgia with permit, but I have not tried it yet.
Haven't gotten up the courage to do so.

My dad called me last week to tell me he had open carried while out one evening. He has been in the gun business since 1980 (kitchen table FFL type) but never really open carried except while hunting. My brother and I have been open carrying for several years, so my dad decided he'd give it a try.

He said the experience was entirely underwhelming (which my brother and I had told him) compared with what some non-open carriers had told him (you know, women screaming, children crying, blood in the streets, etc). Just went to half a dozen places, stores, a restaurant for dinner, etc. Nobody batted an eye.

In Florida it is not illegal for your gun to be seen if it was being concealed. Also if you are going fishing or hunting it can be open carried. Subject to the cops view of the law. I fished a lot in the glades at night and was never given problem by LEO's.
