How to find out age of rifle??

Ok, I bought an old .22 bolt action for my stepdaughter and I to go plinking with, since the 38 and 9mm were gettin a lil pricey to replace.... Any way its a nice lil shooter. Needs a good cleaning, a front sight, and some tlc but over all, a good first rifle for her.

Few questions.. there is NO finish on this stock at all. Just bare wood. Normal? Doesn't seem to have ever had a finish on it either. Whats the Best way to clean it up, its a lil dirty from sitting, and being used , and from the oils from everyones hands-skin..

Any way to tell from the serial any specifics on it?. Build date? Build total? Etc..

It's a Remington 582 .22 bolt action 13 round tube fed.

I know these were made from 65ish to 1982. So its been around awhile, but if it turns out to be OLDER THEN ME! I may just have to use it less and save it to pass on to her later..

Anyways, any help or ideas are great.

I have an old Colt i wanted to find out about,I called them and they gave me a contact e-mail that i could send pics. to.Worked out great.

It should have some barrel codes, in letters on the left side of the barrel. If the barrel is original to the gun, which it sounds as if it, then can tell what the age is. Should be some other proof marks too.

Barrel mark, yes there are some. Can't make out what the first one is. Maybe a "my lil pony" head? Lol. Second, looks like a private's chevron. Third, the letter V. And Fourth, the # 24.

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.

So this one he speaks of must be a 79 built model. That 514 that Inherited from my uncle, that he inherited from Granddad is a 43 IIRC.

Stupid ass redneck family members weren't the least bit interested. I simply asked about it and they all looked at me, like why would you want the POS??? And they started poppin off, I don't care, I don't want it and it was handed to me. But they all fought over his ATV and his Gas Grill. Idiots !!! I got the Rem 514 and my Uncles Favorite Camo Hunting Jacket and a compass pinned to it. I'm the long lost nephew that lived out of state, and I feel like I'm the one that scored the most. Noone got the ATV, there were liens against it, the house and property and vehicles. They fought over his tools, but I got the gun and the jacket !!! :waytogo: Oh, and his deer head mount buck with his name and date he killed this deer in 79 that noone else gave a shit about.

Ok, I'm good with V=79. Anyone have any ideas about the numbers?? 24? The 24th one produced of that shift? Maybe? 24th made of the year.

Just seems like a lot more markings on this barrel than were listed..

I also found this, but those marks still don't jive with this drawing either. The horse head would be final inspector, the private's chevron would have to be a letter for the month (could be a bad "X" strike??). The "V" would be the year, and the "24" would be assembly.
