Removing the Confederate flag

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley announced her support of removing the Confederate flag from state grounds. Is this a over reaction to what happen to the recent church shooting? or is it long overdue?..as many feel that flag is a symbol trenched in racism and slavery aimed at blacks..or for others it is part of their state history and a form of pride and rebellion since the days of the civil war. Like to hear your opinions and comments...

I believe it's part of the south it has nothing to do with racism at one point in time it may have but that was back in the slavery days and we are way past that I hope . I'm not sure I understand the time you know it doesn't seem right things I should've been done awhile back if it was gonna get done. Jmho

I think it's long overdue. The flag that flies over the captiol isn't the "Confederate Flag". It is the battle flag of the Army of North Virginia. So, essentially, it is the flag of a defeated army, which is quite a silly thing to fly 120 years after the defeat of said army.
People want to romanticize the "rebel cause" and go on about the flag representing "states rights." I've never bought that argument. And to say that a the flag of an army that was fighting to keep slavery has nothing to do with racism is off the mark, in my opinion.

The flag belongs in a museum, not flying over a government building.

I want it flying over state that thinks the federal government is tyrannical. The war against the states was and is still on going . We are all slaves to the fed now. Sherman was a mass murder and war criminal. The results of any war are written by the winners. The christian flag will be the next flag torn down with the mexican flag flown over the Stars and Strips. Socialism at its finest. My family has never owned any slaves but fought on the south's side ,my heritage still stands strong and I would fight to fly that flag.

Damn shame the north can not hear.

It's not just the North. Look at what is going on in SC right now. IMO it's a knee jerk reaction to the shooting in Charleston. Once something is labeled as racist whether it deserves it or not, it can't be washed off. It's a permanent stain no matter how much logic you use to treat it.

I'd never really given the battle flag much attention. But what I've found so far is that it isn't (originally) a flag of racism. Some hate groups adopted the flag which tarnished it heritage. Like I said above, once it got that reputation, nothing is going to change it.

So one group looks upon the flag as a sign of Southern heritage and another group sees it as a sign of racism. We'll have to wait and see which group gets their way. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that it doesn't fly very much longer.

I think it should be voted on by the people of SC.

Well that makes too much sense. Isn't that the way government is suppose to work? We have a representative in congress voting the way his/her constituents want them to? But no, they know better what's good for the people. We're too stupid to know what we want so lets just let them take care of us. That's what it's evolved to.

Now Nascar is jumping off the confederate flag/merchandise theme too..along with Sears, Amazon, Walmart, Ebay and other major corporations. The days of the old flag seems to be headed to a museum setting or mothballed for good. But I like the idea of state voters deciding it's fate instead...majority rules.

There are pictures of Roof holding the Confederate flag which automatically make it a bad thing. He chose this flag as a symbol of hate. So their way of thinking is to get rid of the flag and the hate will go away. Attacking the flag is their way of closure. It's the same logic about assault weapons. If we can just get rid of them then nobody will ever be shot again.

I know they've been going after the Confederate flag on and off for many years. But the Charleston incident has given them a new foothold to go after it and I think they'll succeed this time. With all the corporate influence against it, it doesn't really stand a chance. Although sales of the Confederate flag went through the roof as they were talking about doing away with it.

I think that the confederate had its time and when the south lost the war it was time to put it away. I think that the south trying to cling to a piece of fabric is just a waste of time and energy as there are many other things that they can do to show displeasure with the current regime in charge of the country. Having said that, I don't think that the flag in itself is a racist statement. I don't think that the flag calls for all whites to subjugate those that they think are inferior to themselves. I agree that it was the flag of a defeated army and if that army "HAD" won, it would be their flag we would be flying now and not the stars and stripes.

I have no problem with people being mad about the way the government is handling things and wanting to use a flag as a symbol to show that displeasure, but I think they need to find a more effective means of doing so. Flags can be ignored. Petitions can be ignored. Calling your congressman can be ignored. We just have to find a better way of getting the point across and I just hope that it is not the way of the gun that is selected and we can do it in a more meaningful manner, because if we let the streets run red with blood, the liberals will have all the ammo they need to call guns owners blood thirsty terrorists and then there really will be rivers of blood in a new civil war. That is just my thoughts. I think that we have to find a better way.

So let me get this straight...... If someone becomes an idiot radical and uses the U.S. Flag as a prop and commits some kind of horrible crime.... We as a nation and business's will get rid of the U.S. Flag and/ or refuse to sell it because of an act by someone that used the flag in a way that 99.999999999999999999999999% of the population would not. This is just nuts

Funny how the rebel soldier statue on the court house lawn is looking at the MLK statue across the street.

Bingo

Btw, if the not so Civil War was really about slavery, why was the Emancipation Proclamation not made until late in the war when England was about to join in? Maybe, just maybe, like most things, it was about money and power and, as we have a long history of doing, we chose to glamorise slaughter in the name of money and power by claiming it was about something noble instead. Afterall, history is written by the victors. Anybody who doubts any of this should ask a Cherokee or Apache or Comanche about the "taming of the west".

Those who ignore the past may have to repeat it. Taking down all the Southern memorials is really going to stop deranged killers! I think it will cause more division.

Bingo! That's what this is all about. And those that want it are just sitting back and laughing at us.

I cannot believe the absurdity of what people are now saying need to be put away. "Gone with the Wind"? Really. They've already canned "Song of the South" because it's too non PC.

People, if you don't like something don't watch, look or spend money on it. But don't force the rest of us to go without. We all don't think the same way. Thank God.
