Ruger 10/22 Ammo, Magazines & Mag Release ONLY Please.

Being that many of us have 10/22's, (everyone should have at least one), and there are so many different versions, so many mods and upgrades available for them, our 10/22 thread is getting cluttered while bouncing around from subject to subject and then back again. None of the info stays consolidated to where it's easily found. Figured it was time for a thread STRICTLY about 10/22 ammo and mags successes and failures. This can also include mag release mods since some mags may or may not work well with some mag release options as well and mag loaders since they're also on topic. :waytogo:

Many times when buying .22LR ammo, we buy bulk ammo and it's a shame to buy a 525 or 1600 round bulk box/case of ammo just to find after 100 rounds it's not going to feed well and then you're stuck with 400 or more rounds that are almost useless. So, don't be afraid to share your 10/22 ammo failures also to keep someone from buying ammo they won't be able to use.

The BX1

The BX1 in Older Retail Blister Packaging.

The BX1-40 Clear 40th Anniversary Edition Mag.

The Bx25. Said to be very reliable and does come apart for cleaning.

The BX25x2. I've been told this is a 1 piece unit. Still comes apart for cleaning, but the 2 mags are combined thru the tear down screws.

Everyone knows of the most common aftermarket Butler Creek 25 Round Mags. They come in Clear and Smoke colors. They are also available in 10 round models.

2 different models of each. A Polymer Lip model called Hot Lips, and the Steel Lip model called Steel Lips. The Butler Creeks have the ability for 2 mags to be snapped together to make a 50 rd Jungle clipped mag. Shoot 25, flip it over and shoot 25 more.

I'm not a big fan of these Star Clipped 10 rounders, but they do separate for single or double jungle clip too. I'd prefer OE Ruger Mags over this set up.

Butler Creek also makes a loader for their mags. I'm not sure if it works with other brands or not.

Here are some other various brands of mags and what little I know about them.

Eagle Brand Mags. Available in Smoke, Clear and Orange Obviously. Also available in 10 rounders. Show here is 30rd mags. I've not ever used these.

This is a Ram Line. I don't think these are even made anymore. Not sure. I know they were or are available in 50rds too and in clear. There was also an optional loader for Ram Line mags. I did at one time have a 50rd Clear. It never worked worth a damn. I trashed it. It was quite expensive way back then too, for a piece of plastic that didn't work.

ProMag 25rd. ProMag makes one for about every detachable mag type firearm don't they? I've never had any experience with this brand in a 10/22.

I had never heard of this brand before unitl now while looking for pics. Shooters Ridge. In clear and is 25rd.

This is a Black Dog branded 25rd Mag. Said to be after the once was, Eaton brand patend. I used to have 3 Eaton mags long ago. 2 of them worked just great, and 1 of them seemed to hang up and jam about every other time I used it. I trashed that one finally. Ended up giving away the other 2 to a buddy in CA before I left there in 91. At the time, they were legal in Cali. If they are indeed the Eaton mag, I would be willing to give them a try again.

Black Dog 50rd Drum Mag. Never seen or used one. :shrug:

MWG TearDrop Drum 50rd Mag. Never seen or used one of these either.

I've never used one of Tactical Innovations mags. But of all the aftermarkets, this one to me seems to be the most impressive and for the right price, I'd be willing to try it if I could not come up with BX25 mags. I like this one since it can be taken apart for cleaning and/or repair and is also adjustable for fine tuning to your gun and/or ammo including any mods you have made.

Here is some info on the Tactical Innovations aka TI mag as posted on Brownell's site. Seems impressive to me.

So there is a few aftermarkets to get us started. Anyone have any experiences with those or any others not shown, post up and tell about them. Many mags are junk, so if you've had a bad experience, share it and save some others the same grief. Or if know now of some that work great, then let us know what to be looking for. I'm ready to give that TI mag a try if I can find one. It was a bit pricey before the latest ban scare, so it maybe much more than I'm willing to spend now. Lucky for me, I do have 2 Steel Lips, 2 Hot Lips, 2 BX-25's on the way, and several of the OE Rotary 10 rounders. One of my Hot Lips doesn't work so well, but I've been told I can work on it, and it will work as flawless as my other Butlet Creeks until it gets gummed with crud which isn't easy to clean out since they're 1 pc and not designed to be taken apart for cleaning.

I've used the factory 10-rd magazines, the butler creek 10 rd hot lips, 25 round hot lips, 25 rd steel lips magazines, and factory 10 rd 77/22 magazines.

I dont recommend any of the magazines with plastic feed lips. they don't feed well for very long.

the 77/22 factory magazines work fine, but in some stocks can be tricky to remove. The 77/22 magazines are visually similar to the 10/22 rotary magazines, but have a flat bottom instead of the curved bottom of the 10/22 magazine.


I put a plastic extended magazine release on one of my 10/22s, but I did it so many years ago I can't remember the brand.

I there with you on that plastic feed lips. I guess you get your money's worth when they were $15 each, but with the ban scare they are much more than that. The time I had bought 2 Steel Lips and 2 Hot Lips, I'd have bought all 4 Steel but I got their last 2 of the Steel lips in stock. The Steel Lips Butler Creek seem to be working OK with most ammo, but not all. Some ammo will shoot in my 10rd Rotart and but NOT in the Steel Lips. Like and idiot, I trashed the boxes, so now I don't recall which ammo's worked and didn't.

That's one reason I started the thread. I'll be able to notate what works and don't and come back here to find it instead of saving empty boxes.

You're not alone. There are a couple other Commie Lib States.

I was born and raised in So Cal. Left there in Dec of 90. Thought about going back, and even kept an 85 K10 Diesel VIN # truck so if I do move back, it's exempt from smog and I can put any motor I want it. After all of this, and I remember the hell I went thru to buy my weapons, and what I can and can not have there, I decided, NO. I'll never move back. :flipthebird: I'd have to give up half my guns and all of my mags. Not gonna happen.

You can usually find a deal on the factory OE 10 round rotary BX1 mags on Ebay. Better deals are in 3-5 at a time. I don't think the Frankenstein ban scare has affected the price of those.

I bought some 10 rounders on midwayusa a few weeks ago. I checked their site the other day and they still had some. Three 10 rounders and a alangator clip is nice

Magazines=
By far the best extended mags that I have used are the Ruger BX25 mags. They are sturdy, reliable, and easily disassembled to clean. I haven't had any issues with feeding with any ammo. I've had many of the other brands (Butler Creek, Shooter's Ridge, Ramline) and they all work for a while, until the get dirty inside, or crack at the feed lips. Just wish I had bought a few more BX25s before the Firearmageddon.

Ammo=
Over the years, I have tried almost every 22 ammo out there. Different brands, types, weights, velocity, etc. I have found that my Ruger likes Centurion brand the best, and that is what I now feed it almost exclusively.

Range was about 40 yards, bench rested.

Mag Release=
I have an extended mag release that a buddy gave me. Don't know the brand. I like it when I'm using the extended mags but not so much with the normal 10 rounders. I find it difficult to both trip the mag release and grasp the magazine to remove, and am contantly dropping it...but maybe that's just me.

Am I new or what? I've never heard of Centurion ammo? Where do you get it? Maybe it being a rare brand I might be able to find some. I can't find .22LR ammo around OKC anywhere in any brand in any size box 50, 100, 525 etc. NONE !!! These fuggin redneck oakies have gone crazy. Ammo shelves are cleaned out everywhere of anything remotely common. Well, you can find bulk cans of .45ACP and that's about it.

Centurion is made by Aguila in Mexico.
I first saw it a few years back at an area gunshow and picked some up just to try. It ran so well, I've been buying it ever since.
