BURKESVILLE, Ky. — A 5-year-old boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister to death in rural southern Kentucky with a rifle he had received as a gift last year, authorities said.

The children's mother was home at the time of the shooting Tuesday afternoon but had stepped out to the front porch for a few minutes and "she heard the gun go off," Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said. He said the rifle was kept in a corner and the family didn't realize a bullet was left inside it.

White told the Lexington Herald-Leader the boy received the .22-caliber rifle as a gift.

"The family didn't realize a bullet was left inside it"...well you can't certainally blame the five year old. In fact I bet the dump ass parents never took that kid in for some firearms safety classes either. Hey this .22 rifle looks cute..let's give it to our little Junior instead of a Gameboy. Now they paid the ultimate accidental shooting.

My old man wouldn't buy me a .22 rifle until I completed a firearms safety class at the age of twelve or so. But a five year old????...:nono:

Yeah, you don't trust a 5 year old with a BB gun let alone a .22. And I hate this "We didn't know it was loaded" BS. You are the adults. You make damn sure it's not loaded. There should be no question and there is no excuse. Look at the consequences you, your son, and your daughter had to pay.

......loaded weapon just sitting there......with parents that dumb, im happy for the girl.

call me an asshole, but leaving a loaded and unlocked weapon in the reach of a 5 year old is about as dumb as a parent leaving their newborn in a car during summer. it just screams, YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE" and have no common sense whatsoever.
