WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service inappropriately flagged conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status, a top IRS official said Friday.

Organizations were singled out because they included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status, said Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups.

In some cases, groups were asked for their list of donors, which violates IRS policy in most cases, she said.

"That was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive and it was inappropriate. That's not how we go about selecting cases for further review," Lerner said at a conference sponsored by the American Bar Association.

"The IRS would like to apologize for that," she added.

Just another case of government agencies over stepping their power and thinking were bigger than anybody else.

"We're now in a very different environment" with new IRS spending curbs, Faris Fink, a top deputy in the agency's small business division at the time, told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Fink, who now heads that 24,000-employee division, said he believes many of the expenditures "should have been more closely scrutinized or not incurred at all and were not the best use of taxpayer dollars."

Someone is turning gov't agencies into their own personal Pitbull. Using not partisan agencies to obstruct opposing groups from getting their msg out or intimidating them so that their membership leaves to keep from being next in line.

I just found out that the first to do this was Kennedy. Then Nixon and now Obumma. Lets see if he meets the same fate as the first two.

The federal government is fighting against state government. When Arizona wanted to enforce laws that the federal government wouldn't, the fed took them to court to fight them (border security and illegal identification). More recently the supreme court just told some other state (can't remember at the moment) that they couldn't implement voter ID. What in the Hell is the Federal government doing telling states what they can and can't do? If a state wants to run things the way they want to they should have every right to do so without interference.
